I had just posted the comments from Bo Schembechler on the Michigan-Ohio St. rivalry, when I learned that Coach Schembechler died this morning, after collapsing during a taping session for a TV show. Our condolences at the Legends Channel go out to everyone who knew Coach Schembechler and loved him. He was truly one of the greats of college athletics. Here's a really nice story, posted at the MCS Poll message boards, about his arrival at Michigan, and the start of his rivalry with Ohio St. I suppose the media conference call from earlier this week was probably his final public interview.
Update: During the media call, a reporter asked Coach Schembechler about the Columbus punk band, The Dead Schembechlers. Here's his response. He obviously kept his sense of humor despite the health troubles that were bothering him.
Update 2: The Dead Schembechlers have announced that tonight's show will be their final show under their current name. If they continue playing, they'll do it under a new name. Proceeds from tonight's show will go to charity.
This week's Roundtable audio comes from a phone-in media conference with several national sports media folks. You'll hear some beeps and static as people join the call, but rather than wait, we wanted to get this stuff up for you right away. We've got John Cooper, Bo Schembechler and RC Slocum looking ahead to Ohio St. vs. Michigan this weekend. Hardcore Wolverines and Buckeyes, don't get too upset, but Cooper and Schembechler actually agree on some things!
